The academic calendar at IIT Delhi is organized in 2 semesters (July-end to Nov and Jan to mid-May). A number of courses are offered in each semester for undergraduate and graduate students. Each course consists of lectures, tutorials and lab hours and is assigned a number of credits. Students are required to complete a specified number of credits to be eligible for a degree. Evaluation is done through assignments, projects, quizzes and exams in each course and students are awarded a grade point (on a scale of ten) at the end of the semester. The grade point average (GPA) is the average of the grade points weighted by the credits.
Part-time studies: Students in employment can pursue M.Tech, MBA and PhD Programs in a part-time-mode. To be eligible the student should have sufficient work-experience (at least 1 yr for M.Tech/MBA and 2 yrs for PhD), and necessary facilities should be available at his/her place of employment – which should be within the national capital territory of Delhi – to carry out research/study.
Switching between programs: Students in the M.Tech/MS(R) who do well in their first semester at IITD have the option of switching to a PhD program.
PhD comprehensive: Students in the PhD program are required to complete coursework to prepare them to undertake research. The number of credits would depend on the student’s academic preparation and the area of research and could vary between 6 and 20. Within the first 3 semesters, students are also required to prepare, present and defend a research plan.
