FAQs

The only scholarship offered by the Govt is the Charpak Scholarship which amounts to around 700 Euros per month. It refunds your travel and also sponsors your Visa. There is no other scholarship offered, neither by IMT nor by the French Govt. However, a couple of years back there was an extra option alongside Charpak where only VISA and some other things were sponsored.

You need to pay for accommodation and food which amounts to around 300 Euros per month.

Courses were mainly in French, but some were also entirely taught in English. Generally only undergraduate-level courses tend to be in French.

Yes, you can. There is a lot of flexibility in that sense. They also get passed for credits, so should not be a problem.

The number of credits you get depends on your department at IIT. They have few branches and relatively limited courses for each. Courses were available in CS, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. Humanities courses are generally only available for first-year students, so you may not be able to do these. It’s generally sensible to do DEs and OEs, as these are easier to get passed. A course like Business Management can easily get passed as an OE. EE, MnC, Mech departments, for instance, would not pass core courses you did there. Do update yourself on the curriculum and courses before going as these can change.

They have multiple semesters of 5 weeks each: 4 weeks of teaching and 1 week of examination. You can generally only do a single course from a field in a semester. There is also no audit-withdrawal. First two months involve some compulsory courses but later you have the flexibility to choose. It’s easy to get the courses of your choice.

  1. Do make sure you plan your curriculum before going there. If you don’t, you can generally suffer in terms of credits. You rarely get as many as you apply for eg: someone applied for 20 and secured 14.5.
  2. Learn a little French beforehand in India. Would be extremely helpful.
  3. They recently started the exchange programme semester where most courses will be taught in English. Visit websites of IMTs and check details out.
